Rare Mughal gold treasures up for auction

Wednesday, 11th February 2004 (4995 views)

A rare selection of gold jewellery treasures are set to go under the hammer today, when the prestigious collection belonging to Clive of India goes on sale.

A series of bejewelled items owned by the empire builder - regarded as one of the most powerful men in the sub-continent during the 18th century when he joined the East India Company - will be unveiled at Christie's auction house.

A multimillionaire in his day, Clive boasted some exquisite pieces of gold jewellery, including an ornate jade-based flask expected to fetch more than £1 million.

The flask, which Christie's specialist William Robinson describes as “one of the most glorious of Mughal jewelled artefacts to have survived to the present day”, features a series of intricately decorated emerald bands all set in gold.

The jewellery was originally taken from the Mughal courts after a series of victorious battles in the region, with descendants of Clive now making them available for auction.
