WGC boss calls on Sri Lankan industry to modernise

Tuesday, 24th February 2004 (4708 views)

World Gold Council deputy president K Sivaram has urged Sri Lankan gold and jewellery industrialists to adopt modern technology.

Mr Sivaram, addressing a special seminar “Jewellery casting - Your future”, said that Sri Lankan gem and jewellery industrialists must improve their technology if they are to compete on the world stage.

He suggested that the Sri Lankan gold and jewellery industry needed a push to adopt successful new techniques, such as casting, comparing Sri Lanka to India, where casting was introduced a few years ago.

'Sri Lanka has a strong resource base and if the right kind of technology is used it will become a main jewellery supplying country in the world,' Mr Sivaram said.

Speaking at the event, organised by Colombo Machinery and Equipment with Hoben in association with the World Gold Council, the gold executive explained that the South Asian region was in a prime position to adopt modern technology and pointed out that the region has a rich cultural heritage associated with jewellery.

Mr Sivaram added that Hoben had set up a casting unit together with their local partners Colombo Machinery and Equipment so that the small players in the Sri Lankan industry can make use of it in manufacturing their jewellery.

Mr Sivaram also held discussions with representatives of EDB and Gem and Jewellery Authority.
