New Indian jewellery lab supports increasing demandWednesday, 17th March 2004 (4442 views) A second lab has been set up in Mumbai to help ease the process of quality certification for diamond-studded jewellery. The use of diamond studs on jewellery items made from precious metals such as gold has become increasingly popular and is an item increasingly exported for India's jewellery sector. Roland Lorie, chief executive officer of the International Gemological Institute (IGI) Worldwide, which commissioned the laboratory, explained to Business Standard: "India is now evolving as world class supplier of diamond studded jewellery, making it an emerging destination for outsourcing by developed markets. "Certification is like giving trustworthiness to the piece of jewellery." Quality certification was found to be a key issue for consumers buying the jewellery items and trends show a move towards branded and certified jewellery rather than traditional purchasing from family jewellers. Gem and jewellery exports for India increased by 26 per cent over the January to December 2003 period, with an approximate export total of $10,646 million.
