Gold jewellery demand following fashion trendsTuesday, 23rd March 2004 (4444 views) New research has shown consumers are becoming more demanding when they choose jewellery and are using items as a fashion statement rather than a symbol of status.MINTEL and the National Jewellery Steering Group which carried out the report claimed consumers were influenced by fashion trends and an appreciation for quality and innovative designs. The 2004 MINTEL Precious Metal Jewellery Report found a strong demand in higher carat gold and increased growth in white gold wedding rings. Mr Hoare, chief executive of the National Association of Goldsmiths (NAG), and chairman of the NJSG told the Scotsman: "These are exciting times for the jewellery industry. "Fashion is now an increasingly important driver in the business and the industry must rise to the challenge and become more innovative and fashion-conscious." Findings also suggested a strong preference for yellow gold has prevailed in the market and now consumers are willing to spend more to get the particular items they want. In addition figures showed women were more likely to buy precious metal jewellery themselves, although men's jewellery sales have seen a considerable increase.
