Medieval coin auction could bring gold to ownerThursday, 25th March 2004 (3670 views) A medieval gold coin originally found in 1966 is predicted to take over £1,000 at auction next month. At 500 years old the item is from the largest collection of gold coins ever found in Britain and is only one of 89 others that were given back to finders rather than the British Museum. Jeremy Cheek, coin expert at Spink's where the coin is to be auctioned explained to the Nottingham Evening Post: "This coin was known in Henry VI's reign as a noble. "An equivalent term today might be a pound or a shilling. It is certainly of famous provenance." The 'Fishpool Hoard' originally found near Ravenshead contained 1,237 coins and nine pieces of jewellery. Coins are believed to have been left there during the War of the Roses.
