Manama Suq hosts Formula One shopping eventThursday, 25th March 2004 (4604 views) The Manama Shopping Formula festival opens tonight and runs until April 8th at Bahrain's historic Manama suq.The festival, timed to coincide with the Bahrain Grand Prix, features a host of entertainment and shopping opportunities, including gold jewellery, traditional handicrafts, art, Bahraini perfumes, ladies garments, pottery, Persian carpets and spices. The suq will play host to live shows, traditional music, a daily raffle, sales, scores of shops, and other attractions for Formula One fans and local residents. Ninety-five businesses have so far registered to take part in the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) initiative, which also features the newly-opened Bahrain Bazaar, located within the Jamana Centre. The festival opens with a ceremony at Bab Al Bahrain to be attended by capital governor Shaikh Humood bin Abdulla Al Khalifa, according to the Gulf Daily News. BCCI retail sales and traditional markets committee chairman and organising committee head Jawad Al Hawaj told a press conference: "The activities will focus around the old suq, including the gold and jewellery market, the textile market, the halwa market and others." BCCI president Khalid Kanoo said that he hoped that traders would take full advantage of the opportunities offered by Formula One.
