An American man recently stumbled across $46,000 worth of stolen jewellery at the bottom of a ravine north of Santa Fe, according to reports.

The Santa Fe resident was walking with his dog when he found the open 180-pound safe and its contents, the Albuquerque Journal reports.

Ventura Chavez turned the safe, which contained several documents, an antique watch collection and gold and silver jewellery, over to local police.

Officers reported that the safe, which was lined with steel and concrete, had been found two months after it had been reported stolen. Sandoval County Sheriff John Paul Trujillo said it appeared burglars had been unable to crack the safe, became frustrated and threw it down the ravine.

Detectives have been inspecting the safe for fingerprints and say they have several leads. Two or three items were not recovered and Mr Trujillo said that deputies would use metal detectors to try to locate the rest of the property in the ravine.

The safe was found to belong to a Cochiti Lake couple and has been returned to them.
