Gold jewellery forms part of a new collection of ancient Egyptian items excavated from tombs that are to go on display in Milwaukee.

"The Quest for Immortality" exhibition is the largest archaeological display from Egypt ever to tour North America.

Robert Ritner, associate professor of Egyptology at the Oriental Institute at the University of Chicago told Indystar: "It's an extraordinary chance to see unparalleled material from the Cairo collection. The only other way you'd see these pieces is to travel to Egypt itself."

Among the items discovered, which could have been made 4,000 years ago is a gold-and-bead bracelet with two tiny gold lions that was made more than 3,000 years ago.

In addition gold bracelets and collars and shiny gold funeral masks form part of the collection of items that would have been buried with bodies to help Egyptians in the afterlife.

The items are on display until August 8 at the Milwaukee Public Museum and then tour a number of other North American locations.
