Old gold site used to boost Jinguashih's tourism

A new ecological park is to be developed in the town of Jinguashih on a previous gold mining site, in a bid to help boost the area's tourism.

The precious metal was previously mined at the site, alongside silver and copper and now the Gold Ecological Park will offer visitors a tour of the area.

Considerable amounts of precious metals were first discovered in the area back in 1890 and from the late 1800s to 1987, more than two million tonnes of precious metals were used.

The new NT$200 million project is being funded by the Taipei County Government Taiwan Power Company and Taiwan Sugar Corp. and work first began in November, with a partial completion due in August.

Although some have raised concerns over the effect on nearby Chiufen, which already hosts the Gold Museum, the developers claim the park will help everyone.

Taipei County Government employee and director of the soon to be completed park, Chiang Min-chin told Taipei Times: "The project is not solely about Jinguashih, but rather a positive step in the right direction for both towns."

Among the attractions at the new park will be a museum, pathways which follow the previous mine's railway, walks through the old mine shaft and the chance to pan for gold.
