Jewellery SMEs offered support with new service

Wednesday, 30th June 2004 (4623 views)

A new project has been set up to help SMEs in the jewellery sector to obtain technology and business research at an affordable rate.

The Virtual Jewellery Supply Chain (VJSC) will offer jewellery firms tools for future development, bringing together the client, manufacturer and all the different suppliers involved in creating a piece of jewellery.

Among the participants in the chain are universities and companies from the UK, Italy, Ireland and France, in response to the fact that many SMEs cannot afford to invest in such research.

Included in the benefits from the system are a reduction in the need for physical products, reduced stocks, time savings and better communication.

Lead partner in the project, Apolonius Nooten-Boom of Hean Studio in Hereford which supplies small jewellery parts explained: "The idea is that the client can interact with everyone down the line involved in specifying a piece of jewellery, eventually creating a uniquely individual item."

"By offering a means with which clients can adapt or customise a piece of jewellery according to their preferences, the result is a service in which jewellery can be made to order."

The system works by allowing retailers or customers to select individual parts of a piece of jewellery on-screen and created a customised item in high quality 3D, a price is then created and the design is sent to the manufacturer and suppliers.
