Golden robbery discovery made by Egyptian researcher

Friday, 13th August 2004 (3050 views)

Details of a 3,000-year old gold and jewellery robbery has been unveiled, according to claims by an Egyptian researcher.

Ahmad Saleh claims that during research on the looting of the tomb of King Sobekemsaf, during the "New Kingdom" era, he discovered there was a plot to cover up theft from the tombs of the Pharaohs.

Reportedly looters were caught and put on trial but because some senior officials were involved the case was closed, according to BBC News Online.

Mr Saleh has told the Al-Masri Al-Yaoum newspaper that he believes this is the first example in history of an official cover up.
