African mining firm AngloGold Ashanti has showcased a new 18-carat gold special collection for the first time in Johannesburg.

'Riches of Africa 2004' was a gold jewellery design competition by the company, with a key theme of 'fire'.

A total of 25 pieces were selected from a huge 1,189 entries, including gold shawls, a tie, a mask, a fan and a breast piece.

The collection is now set to go on display at a number of key events such as Cape Town Fashion Week, International Jewellery London and a special fashion show in South Africa House.

Items could be produced in either yellow, white or rose gold and were judged by key figures including UK-based Jan Springer, jewellery designer Isa Gesseau, fashion designer Gavin Rajahand and the fashion editor of Elle magazine, Shaldon Kopman.

The winning item was a headpiece, inspired by shooting stars and comets, and made by Adele Pretorius who plans to start her own jewellery company when she finishes studying.
