Wednesday, 25th August 2004 (6836 views) A gold pendant thought to be about 1,500 years old has been discovered in Leicestershire.

The item that has been dubbed one of the country's best ever Saxon finds, was discovered by an amateur metal detector.

At present the piece is in the British Museum in London and could be worth several thousand pounds.

Mr Devenyi told the Leicester Mercury: "It was a heart-stopping moment when I first saw it, but I knew it was special. Gold and garnets don't corrode in the earth."

The pendant has a shield shaped gem that is just over 2cm long and is held in place with a collar and backplate of gold.

However the item was actually first discovered in December last year, but its details could not be revealed until after an inquest which confirmed it was a treasure trove.
