US goes crazy for gold pet jewellery

Wednesday, 25th August 2004 (5157 views)

The latest craze in the US is to spoil your pet rotten and take them out in style with pet charms.

With new figures showing that Americans spent over $32.4 billion on their pets last year, a popular item of choice is a charm necklace for dogs.

Mary Mendola, customer service supervisor at Rembrandt, a US jewellery store, commented: "Pet charms have always been popular."

Talking about her dog, which has a personalised charm necklace, proprietor of Jewells jewellery store, Katharine Wells added: "Pennyweight loves her necklace and so do my customers.

"I've sold one other dog necklace, a few bracelets and lots of single charms to attach to dog collars."

Ms Wells is now planning on promoting the pet pieces as part of an upcoming charity event, with items available in different carat gold and sterling silver.
