AngloGold Ashanti welcomes Guinea export action

Thursday, 26th August 2004 (3423 views)

The embargo on the export of gold bullion by AngloGold Ashanti, from the Republic of Guinea, has been removed by its government.

According to AngloGold, the move means a better environment for negotiations between the company and the government.

Sam Jonah KBE, president of AngloGold Ashanti, said: "We are delighted with this development and look forward to the expeditious and amicable resolution of all outstanding matters.

To this end, the company has received from the Government suggested amendments to the existing convention and we expect to recommence and to conclude negotiations shortly."

The development also means the firm can go ahead with plans for the Siguiri mine in the area to benefit both the company and Guinea.
