AngloGold Ashanti to begin gold exploration in DRC

AngloGold Ashanti has revealed it will start to explore for gold in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) this year.<BR/><BR/>The world's second biggest gold producer has claimed the move follows the government's attempts to recover from a civil war.<BR/><BR/>AngloGold's president, Sam Jonah, told Business Report: "This is no sleeper for us. By the end of the year we will be starting our exploration activity there."<BR/><BR/>According to a spokesman the company will be spending a total of $33.4 million looking for new gold mines overall this year.<BR/><BR/>The government for the area and the UN peacekeeping mission have both approved the exploration.<BR/><BR/>AngloGold acquired prospects in north eastern DRC when it merged with Ashanti Goldfields to become AngloGold Ashanti.<img src="http://directnews.dehavilland.co.uk/dn.gif?feedid=196&itemid=3461985"/>
