Chinese moon cakes given a golden touchMonday, 27th September 2004 (4821 views) The long running Chinese tradition of moon cakes has experienced a revamp, with gold being used as a key way to impress.According to IPS News, moon cakes are the traditional delicacy of the mid-autumn festival and used to be seen as a symbol of the round harvest moon and family reunion. However, as Chinese consumers grow richer, the cakes are being used as a sign of wealth, with some bakers producing cakes filled with gold. The festival also celebrates a Chinese love story and so jewellers are cashing in, offering heart shaped jewellery rather than heart shaped moon cakes. In addition, cake packaging has also become more glamourous - plated with precious metals or draped in golden silk. Some supermarkets in Beijing have offered moon cakes containing real gold for $1,202, said to be a special sign of luck. However, some have raised concerns that the new glamourous moon cakes are distracting away from their original main purpose.
