Ancient gold jewels discovered in Bulgaria

Friday, 22nd October 2004 (3470 views)

Digs in Bulgaria have revealed an array of tiny golden jewels, which archaeologists believe date back to around 5,000 years ago.

A team from Bulgaria's National Museum of History believe the items could be possible proof of Europe's earliest civilisation.

Among the items discovered were gold rings, beads, and gold jewellery inlaid with tiny pearls.

The head of Bulgaria's National Museum of History, Bozhidar Dimitrov, told BBC News Online: "For now, we have 400 gold pieces, and every day another 10 or 15 pop up."

According to the team, the jewels have shown expert craftsmanship and an unexpectedly high level of technology for the period.

Mr Dimitrov claims that a lot of the gold ornaments are like jewels round in ancient Troy ruins.
