The union minister for agriculture, food and consumer affairs has revealed today that India has already awarded over 800 licenses for gold hallmarking under its new system.<BR/><BR/>Sharad Pawar explained that the new voluntary hallmarking in operation is proving popular and over 40 lakh of jewellery has been marked so far, according to the Financial Express.<BR/><BR/>The move is part of an overall improvement in standards for India, with hallmarking showing consumers they can be assured of a certain quality from the jewellery.<BR/><BR/>Mr Pawar was speaking at a special ceremony for the Rajiv Gandhi National Quality Awards that were organised by the Bureau of Indian Standards.<BR/><BR/>Gold jewellery in India has received considerable promotion recently, particularly with the opening of its first gold souk.<img src="http://directnews.dehavilland.co.uk/dn.gif?feedid=196&itemid=3731161"/>
