Fashion goes metallic

Friday, 19th November 2004 (4275 views)

The latest rule in the world of fashion appears to be that anything metal goes - whether it be clothes, jewellery or accessories.

A number of different styles can be achieved with precious metals - either the laid back bohemian look with gold coin earrings and charm bracelets, or go for bling like Beyonce.

In addition, glamour can be created with a gold vintage brooch or a pair of chandelier earrings.

John Ayton, founder of Links of London jewellers, says: "A lot of women now buy jewellery for themselves and look for a piece that they can express themselves with and make their own. It is a very personal and individual choice."

According to the Scotsman, gold is so popular with consumers since it has an exotic feel and a decadent past.

"People are now looking to something stronger with which to make a statement. A few years ago you just couldn't sell yellow gold, but it has come right back, spearheaded by this year's obsession for all things ancient, inspired by the film Troy and John Galliano's Egyptian collection," Mr Ayton added.

The jeweller recommends that 18-carat gold can be used to create a warm look for an outfit, but it is important to remember that less is more and too many layers of gold will not work.
