Tuesday, 23rd November 2004 (6246 views) The Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council has secured a deal with the Bhawanipur Gujarati Education Society College in India to offer courses in jewellery trade.<BR/><BR/>The draft was first approved on November 15 and will see the Mumbai based institute grant a franchise status to run courses on all aspects of the jewellery trade, such as goldsmith work, diamond setting and gold refining.<BR/><BR/>Pankaj Parekh, council convener (eastern region), told Fibre to Fashion: "Faced by a shortage of trained personnel at Manikanchan, the gem park in Salt Lake, the council's Kolkata office had been trying to set up a training facility. <BR/><BR/>"They approached a number of colleges, including Bhawanipur, which readily accepted the proposal."<BR/><BR/>It is thought that certificate courses will begin from the 2005 academic session.<BR/><BR/>Figures suggest that around 20 per cent of the country's 850 tonne annual gold import arrives in the state for jewellery production.<img src="http://directnews.dehavilland.co.uk/dn.gif?feedid=196&itemid=7139882"/>
