Gold is being used in the latest nanotechnology to help keep single crystal nanowires in place.

Researchers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) have developed a technique which uses nanoparticles of gold arranged in rows on a sapphire surface to help grow horizontal semiconductor wires.

The wires could not only link nanoelectrical devices but also work as devices themselves, according to Science Daily.

The precious metal has helped in the sector by allowing particularly small wires to be created.

Orientation of wires can then be determined by adjusting the size of the gold particles.
