US government settles Holocaust jewellery lawsuit

Tuesday, 21st December 2004 (4281 views)

Lawyers have revealed that the US government has agreed to settle a lawsuit over a trainload of gold, jewellery and other property.

The lawsuit is with tens of thousands of Hungarian Holocaust survivors who lost property when it was seized by the American army at the end of the Second World War.

However, goods worth $200 million, stolen by Nazis and confiscated by the US are still being discussed.

The action was launched by Hungarian Jews in Miami, where many people from the community live.

According to reports, the agreement will also apply to Holocaust survivors in Israel, Australia and elsewhere.
