An African village is experiencing a gold rush as outsiders and residents flock to the area to hunt for the precious metal.

According to the Nation, the Lirhembe village of Ikolomani, in the Kakamega district, was once a sleepy area but now a flurry of activity surrounds it.

Mr Ligami, a resident in the village explained: "We always hope, like others, that we shall benefit when gold is struck. I am yet to get something substantial but I remain hopeful."

Everyone is discussing gold in the area, with homesteads turned into gold mines, other industry areas being looked over and gardens being given to miners.

The area is now being surveyed and beacons are being placed where gold deposits are likely to exist.

Work begins at the crack of drawn and goes on into late at night, with each of the groups finding around 250-500 grams of the mineral per week.
