Gold used in innovative muscle technology

Wednesday, 26th January 2005 (4015 views)

A new machine has been created using gold deposits to help muscle growth and stimulation.

The machine, made in the US, walks using muscles it has made for itself and could in the future help paralysed patients breathe without a ventilator or help to clear plaque from inside the walls of a human coronary artery.

In addition, with funding from NASA, the team also claim the machine could help repair damage on remote aircraft.

The innovative machine was built using photolithography to etch the silicon structure and then the frame was coated with various materials, including gold.

According to New Scientist, the gold then works by providing points for which the growing muscle cells can attach to.

Before using the precious metal to help muscle growth, the team had to manually attach developed muscle tissue to a micromachine, something that can cause damage to the tissue.
