Golden prize for trophy winnersThe news feeds on this site are independently provided by Adfero Limited © and do not represent the views or opinions of the World Gold Council. Thursday, 27th January 2005 (4997 views) The winner of the 2005 Wellington Cup will this year not only be proud to win, but also proud to own the trophy itself with its artistic look and use of precious metals.

Large in size, the trophy is plated with 18-carat gold and is stored in a stylish mahogany case, with miniature versions for jockeys and trainers.

Ian Douglas, of The Village Goldsmith in Wellington, explained: "We want people to look at the Cup in a hundred years and say, 'that's a stunning piece of art'. For the design, I went out to Trentham to look at the first Cup of 1894, which is a beautiful piece of craftsmanship.

"I adapted the essence of it - the overall rosebowl shape, the detail like the finials, leaf work and scrolled handles - into a simplified, modern and stylish Cup with visual links to the original trophy".

The Village Goldsmith has designed and made the cup for five years from 1997 to 2002 and was contacted again for this year's piece.

According to international standards the package is worth over $20,000, but the designers believe to its owner it will be "worth much more".

The making of the trophy is very complicated and parts are brought together as a whole, after specialists around the country contribute their part to various pieces.

The Wellington Cup takes place in New Zealand at the Wellington Racing Club in Trentham.
