Findings from research by the Jewellery Consumer Opinion Council (JCOC) have shown that yellow gold was the most popular metal of choice for Valentine's jewellery.

In addition, surprisingly, people also prefer to purchase lower priced items, according to Rapaport.

Figures showed consumers tended to spend under $200 for a jewellery gift and only 10.7 per cent claimed they would spend over $500.

The most popular items of choice were earrings and necklaces, closely followed by fashion rings, watches and bracelets.

Coloured stones continue to be popular in jewellery too, with birthstone and semi precious gemstones topping the Valentine's jewellery list.

Figures also showed that the number of people purchasing jewellery in January was up, with a considerable amount buying the jewellery for themselves.

When deciding where to buy items, the study found retailers are still the favourite, whilst eBay is voted the best for online shopping and the QVD TV station is the best for home shopping.
