Record sales at a Welsh jewellery firm have led to production being moved to another workshop.

Cymru - Y Metel, which uses gold from the Gwynfynydd mine in North Wales, is now moving to a larger workshop in the same region due to demand.

The company claims extra space is needed to create its chains, rings, pendants and brooches.

However, extra Welsh gold will have to be sourced to allow the company to make the most of export opportunities.

Nigel Blayney, managing director of Aardvark Jewellery, the Cheltenham-based parent of Cymru - Y Metel, told the Daily Post: "We have always had a small workshop in North Wales but we had such a tremendous year last year for Welsh gold jewellery that it prompted us to look at expansion.

"We have exported to more than 30 different countries over the years and we would like to take part in trade missions to Japan and America. At the moment we have enough Welsh gold to last ten years, but that would obviously change if we were to double our output," he added.

The expansion is set to create more jobs for the region and the company confirmed it would be looking for new staff later in the year.
