UK tea brand PG Tips has commissioned a diamond and gold teabag to celebrate its 75th birthday.

The innovative item brings a different meaning to having expensive tastes, with the teabag said to be the most expensive in the world, according to Liverpool Daily Post.

Jewellers Boodle and Dunthorne have created the item, which is the standard pyramid shape, filled with 100 2.25-carat diamonds and fine, limited edition tea leaves.

The rest of the bag includes a 100 diamond covering and a white gold chain in place of the standard teabag string, which is also adorned with a further 80 diamonds.

Costing £7,500 to produce, the teabag costs slightly more than the brand's typical production budget of 2.5p for each mass-produced tea bag.

"When PG Tips first asked us to make the tea bag we were a little taken aback," Maria Webster, who designed the item, admitted.

"Initially it was going to have a mesh of gold and make it a replica, but the decision was made to take a tea bag, which only costs 2.5p, and add diamonds to it. We do get some unusual requests…but this was certainly one of the strangest."

The teabag will now go on a nationwide tour to promote the brand and it will then be used as part of a prize draw to raise money for Manchester Children's Hospital.

PG Tips spokesman Pete Harbour said: "As it's our 75th birthday, we wanted to do something special to remind people just how much they love the great British cup of tea."
