More than 500 major jewellers are to take part in a new festival next month.

The Karnataka Gold Festival 2005 has been organised by The Art of Jewellery magazine and the World Gold Council (WGC).

Running from April 4th until May 25th, the event will run alongside the festivals of Ugadi and Akshaya Tritiya and the wedding season, according to the Deccan Herald.

The festival follows from the great success of the Bangalore Gold Festival last year.

WGC vice-president, K Shivram, said: "The response from jewellers all over Karnataka has been overwhelming and we sincerely believe that the jewellery trade in the State will immensely benefit by this combined initiative.'

A key part of the event will be the five kilogram gold prize for consumers, which will be spread across 246 winners and one kilo gold bumper prize.

Singer and actress Vasundhara Das has agreed to be the brand ambassador for the festival.

The organisers claim the event will be "one of the biggest jewellery shopping festivals in India.'
