Japan to auction rare gold coinsMonday, 18th April 2005 (3596 views) Japan's Finance Ministry has revealed it is to auction off around 32,700 rare Japanese gold coins.The items were issued between 1868-1989, known as the Meiji and Showa eras and are thought to be worth several billion yen. Held by the state, the coins will be auctioned throughout a three-year time span, beginning this year. A panel of experts has now approved the coins' quality and conventional floor auctions and internet auctions will be used to sell the items. The items are thought to be proving popular with collectors, since the coins are the last of such government holdings and many of the pieces are rare. According to reports, the coins will be placed in individual transparent packaging to increase their value.
