Harmony appoints new board member

South African gold miner Harmony has appointed a new member on its board of directors, which will come into effect from today.<br/><br/>Joachim Chissano was formerly the president of Mozambique and was chosen due to playing a key role in Africa for decades, according to Business Day.<br/><br/>Harmony chief executive, Bernard Swanepoel, said: "We are extremely pleased former President Chissano has agreed to become a non-executive director of Harmony.<br/><br/>"His long track record of commitment to and involvement in the shaping of African politics and economics will ensure our business remains relevant and effective."<br/><br/>Mr Swanepoel claimed that the experiences of the president would be "of great value" for the firm<br/><br/>Commenting on his appointment, Mr Chissano said: "Harmony is a progressive company with strong links to Mozambique through its workforce…I am looking forward to participating at board level in a committed southern African company with an international outlook."<br/><br/>Harmony is currently the world's number six gold miner.<img alt="track" src="http://directnews.dehavilland.co.uk/dn.gif?feedid=196&itemid=8332080"/>
