A former Olympic swimmer has announced he is to auction off a gold medal he won in 2000.

Anthony Ervin will auction the medal to raise funds for victims of last year's tsunami.

He won the medal after tying with Gary Hall Jr for first place for the 50-metre freestyle in Sydney, Australia.

The swimming star is now coming out of retirement and is hoping to win a medal in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

An auction of the medal is expected to begin on eBay today.

"The medal itself is just a symbol of the work I put in. But the work was what was mine. And the time I invested, I still have that…By doing this, it's a good way of being able to give back," Mr Ervin said.
