Jewellers in Calcutta have seen an increase in demand for gold as Indian brides continue to choose the precious metal for their wedding ceremony.

The leading jewellery house in the city, PC Chandra, is hosting an exhibition of pure gold ornaments from today to mark the popularity of gold for the wedding season.

"The demand for gold jewellery is increasing every year, especially when it comes to wedding jewellery," Prosanto Chandra, deputy managing director of the jewellery house, told the Calcutta Telegraph.

Called Swarna Mirigaya, the exhibition showcases a series of new designs in necklace sets, bangles, chains, rings and earrings, all specially created for the festival.

As well as traditional filigree designs, the individually crafted pieces feature a mixture of western and ethnic motifs.

"We have noticed that for wedding jewellery, people prefer a lot of filigree work and antique designs, whereas jewellery influenced by western designs sells well for other occasions," Mr Chandra explained.

Rising demand for gold has seen the PC Chandra house expand from four to eight showrooms over the last five years.
