Jewellery making introduced to Botswana

Thursday, 26th May 2005 (4881 views)

Schonberg Creations, a semi-precious stones cutting shop and jewellery manufacturers, has opened in Gaborone, Botswana.

The shop at Broadhurst Industrial was opened by first lady Barbara Mogae, who received a topaz and gold necklace from managing director Desmond Cloete's wife.

The shop, hailed as the first of its kind in Southern Africa, operates the only production facility of its kind in the region, functioning as manufacturing jewellers, stonecutters, polishers and bead manufacturers, according to All Africa.

Different ranges of jewellery were on display at the opening, including pearls, bracelets, earrings and necklaces. The manager-in-charge, Dhammika Wickramasingha, who worked for 15 years in the same industry in Sri Lanka, said the company would have a workforce of 20 people in Gaborone and revealed that Schonberg creations had plans to open outlets in Francistown and Maun in the future.

Mr Wickramasingha said: " I don't target only the Botswana market. Already I have orders from Bangkok. My target market is Hongkong, South Africa, Germany, and we also want to penetrate the USA market, from here."

Schonberg Creations also provides designer jewellery and makes jewellery for customers that bring in their own designs. Schoenberg Jewellers will be giving courses on the making of necklaces, lariats and bracelets with beads and crystals.track
