A new mum in Australia has won a record $500,000 in gold bullion on a television quiz show.

Brigid O'Connor, from Sydney, scooped Australia's biggest TV quiz show prize on Nine Network's Temptation. The show described as the new Sale of the Century, started four weeks ago.

Ms O'Connor, 33, is on maternity leave after giving birth to daughter Sophia less than a year ago.

She told News Ltd newspapers that she planned to sell the gold to enable her to delay her return to work

"I feel so lucky because all my friends have to go back to work and it's heartbreaking putting a little baby in child care, but it's a reality," she said. "Which is why I am so over the moon that that doesn't have to be my reality."
