International award for golden liqueur

Wednesday, 29th June 2005 (3242 views)

An innovative liqueur made from kiwifruit and containing flecks of real gold, has received an international award.

The drink made in a distillery in Bay of Plenty, New Zealand, has shavings of 23-carat gold leaf in it.

Creators Irmengard, Michael and Tobi Deinlein were presented with a silver medal for the product at the International Spirit Awards.

Only 30,000 half-litre bottles of the liqueur are produced each year by the small company.

The gold was originally added to the drink as "a bit of a marketing ploy" since consuming gold is said to hold health benefits.track
