Dubai has reported that its booming gold jewellery market has been a big boost to tourism in the country.

Visitors from Saudi Arabia are reported to be the biggest single source of UAE tourists, arriving in the country to make the most of bargains in fashion, jewellery and gold.

Figures from Dubai’s Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) have revealed a 70 per cent increase in visitors from Saudi Arabia last year, with some 487,122 people making the short-haul trip.

The Dubai government expects large summer arrivals from abroad and aims to have 15 million hotel guests by 2010 with shoppers being drawn to the city‘s precincts.

Starwood Hotels & Resorts UAE reported a 10 per cent growth in the hotel occupancy for June as compared to figures in 2004.

Gold and electronics are big attractions to tourists looking for a bargain, with Gold Souk also a popular draw in a city which offers luxury breaks to holidaymakers.
