China's Hong Zheng was awarded first prize for men's jewellery in the Gemological Institute of America's 29th annual George A Schuetz Design Competition.

Mr Zheng created a ring from gold, black onyx, jadeite and diamonds in a telescope inspired shape, which wowed the judges and created history as it’s the first time a Chinese national has won the coveted award.

"The design is neat, simple, and smooth. Cylindrical stone cutting is used throughout. It shows the gentle side of masculinity, tinged with oriental charm," Mr Zheng commented.

The successful jeweller beat off the competition of 105 others after being judged on the design, wearability, manufacturability and appeal of his piece.

The second prize winner, Hyun Jung Min, also used gold in her design: a tie pin and cuff links made of black onyx, white and yellow gold, and melee diamonds.

George A Schuetz, the competition's namesake, was a men's jewellery designer and a successful entrepreneur.

© Adfero Ltd
