Yellow gold has made a slight comeback although many customers are still plumping for platinum, reports International Jewellery London (IJL), which opens its trade show in September.

Consumers are also being drawn to large sparkling jewels, particularly less traditional stones such as coloured diamonds and pink sapphires.

Blue sapphires, emeralds and rubies have fallen in popularity whereas yellow diamonds and pearls combined with other stones are on the rise.

These results suggest a move towards bigger showpiece jewellery that makes a statement and retailers reported a corresponding rise in requests for bespoke jewellery.

IJL show director, Anna Wales, noted that consumers are paying more in department stores as well as in exclusive jewellery houses.

"It is encouraging to note that despite a downturn in trading as a whole across UK retail jewellery stores...there is strong evidence that consumers are willing to pay more," she told Reuters.

A presentation and discussion about these results led by fashion writer and lecturer, Brenda Polan, will occur on September 4th as part of the IJL 2005 seminar programme.

© Adfero Ltd
