Thursday, 25th August 2005 (4602 views) Oxiana will create up to 400 new full-time jobs by 2008 at its soon to be developed gold and copper mine at Prominent Hill, south Australia.<br/><br/>The gold mining company is aiming to employ local workers as it has a native-title agreement, which commits it to providing jobs for Aboriginal locals.<br/><br/>"We'll have a training program for the operators and the skilled positions and we'll also involve the Aboriginal community in all of that - people from Coober Pedy and nearby, primarily from South Australia," explained Owen Hegarty, Oxiana's managing director.<br/><br/>Mining estimates stand at 110,000 to 130,000 ounces of gold a year and 90,000 to 1000,000 of copper.<br/><br/>Oxiana expects the mine and surrounding infrastructure to cost a revised amount of AU$530 million to build.<br/><br/>This is a dramatic rise on last year's initial top estimate of AU$350 million and will consist of AU$272 million alone for on and offsite infrastructure.<br/><br/>Construction will start on the open-pit mine next year and a few hundred will be directly employed in this.<br/>
