An array of gold, silver and bronze coins were on display at the three-day Mumbai Coin Society fair, reports the Press Trust of India

Modern and ancient currencies were shown alongside each other; from early rare British Empire bank notes to modern day items from Indian Republic state mints in Kolkata, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Noida.

Reportedly the world's smallest coin, a 0.03 gram gold coin from the Vijayanagar dynasty, issued around 1500AD, was one of the event's highlights.

The event aimed to promote awareness of India's heritage of coins and to encourage fair-trading between coin dealers and collectors.

Some original dyes, used to mint coins, formed part of the display, although these coins never made it into circulation. A die is a metallic piece used to strike one side of a coin and imprint it with a design.

Interested persons can get in contact with the society, which holds regular meetings, lectures and presentations.
