A birthday poem resting inside the gold case of the watch was also sold alongside the historical timepiece. It is often rumoured that the iconic Monroe and President Kennedy were having an affair. The watch ended up in the possession of Kennedy-aide Kenneth O'Donnell, who was reportedly told by the President to get rid of it. It was sold on Saturday by auction house Alexander Autographs. Ms Monroe was immortalised after singing Happy Birthday to President Kennedy in the same year that the watch was presented. This follows the recent auctioning of another gold watch of historical importance, that of Lord Nelson, which sold for £400,000.
