Wednesday, 26th October 2005 (2932 views)

Mining firm Apollo Gold Corporation has temporarily stopped mining at a project in Montana.

The firm said that the eastern pit wall still had some safety risks despite the area being accessible.

Apollo has said that a small amount of mining will continue, but not near this zone. It intends to mill low grade material and produce lead, zinc and dore gold for the next 14 days, during which a safety improvements and assesments will be made in the eastern pit wall.

David Russell, president and chief executive officer of Apollo, said: "The Company has started the technical review, with outside consultants, which is expected to take two to four weeks. The review is focused on developing and analyzing pit access options so that the pit can continue to be mined safely."

He added that employees had been placed on temporary layoff status, but that would change once the safety of the area could be guaranteed.

Apollo currently has projects under way in Montana, Ontario, and Mexico.
