Californians told to collect $4.8 billion bootyFriday, 28th October 2005 (4307 views) Californians are being asked to come forward and claim their items from unclaimed property worth $4.8 billion. In the unclaimed property vault are antique gold coins, various pieces of jewellery and even a $25,000 88-carat Blue Star sapphire ring. Those with assets to claim include first lady Maria Shriver and actress Reese Witherspoon, who needs to collect around $100's worth of property from Tiffany & Co. Some people may think it is unbelievable that anyone can misplace their gold but, according to state controller Steve Westley, it can and does happen. "It happens more often then you'd believe. Someone passes away. Someone moves and doesn't change the address," he commented. The appeal for missing owners is an annual event and this year an online system has been put in place to facilitate the process. Owners, or their next of kin, who have failed to collect their assets from bank vaults are invited to claim them back from the state.
