The Salvation Army has been tossed four large gold coins by a generous passer-by in Denver, Rocky Mountain news reports.

The four gold Krugerrand coins were flipped into a kettle in a grocery and are said to be worth nearly $1,000 apiece.

US citizens began donating gold coins, rings and other precious items to the Salvation Army in 1982 and the Denver incident is by no means the first this year.

"It has been since the late 1980s that these gold coins have appeared. Every year we look forward to it, it's tradition," said Stephanie Gustafson, a Salvation Army spokeswoman.

A diamond wedding ring was reportedly dropped into a kettle in Denver a day earlier.

Proving that goods things come in threes, a solid gold one-ounce Canadian gold coin worth over $500 was spun into a collection pot in Billings a few days back.

Over 300 gold coins alone have been thrown the Salvation Army's way since 1982.

As well as bolstering the good causes supported by the charity, such acts of kindness also act as a tremendous morale booster for staff.
