A lost gopher trap has led a couple to find a gold ring they thought long gone.

According to the Union Tribune, Harry and Pat Dort were shocked to find a gold ring after asking their son-in-law Bob Harris to find a gopher trap they believed an errant gopher had taken into his hole.

Using a metal detector, Mr Harris found what he thought was the lost gopher trap. However, the wily gopher had not deposited the trap here – it was a ring mislaid by Mr Dort 54 years ago.

The gold signet ring had originally belonged to Mr Dort's great-grandfather and had been passed down through the generations.

As well as this unexpected find, the pilfered gopher trap was recovered.

Metal detectors frequently lead people to unearth precious gold items from lost signet rings to more ancient gold sometimes dating back centuries.

Gold is frequently chosen to make jewellery as, in addition to its decorative qualities, it does not corrode, making it the perfect enduring precious metal.
