The creators of Scotland's most expensive ever Christmas pudding are adorning their deserts with a gold topping.

Each £300 pudding will be topped with 22-carat gold leaf flakes by chefs at Edinburgh's luxurious Prestonfield Hotel.

The golden touch was conceived to complement the desert's other opulent ingredients.

Each desert will contain £250 worth of 50-year-old malt whiskey, worth £6,000 a bottle.

The scarcity of the whisky and the time each pudding takes to make means the hotel won't be putting the dish on the main menu, although the owners are confident it will be a hit.

"I think it will be very popular because people want to indulge themselves over Christmas and try something different. It is a time to spoil loved ones and yourself with great food and drink," James Thomson told the Daily Record.

The dish must be ordered in advanced.

Each mouthful would set you back the equivalent of £40.
