UK consumers are being urged to follow a few simple steps if they decide to purchase gold jewellery over the internet this Christmas.

The online luxury goods market has rocketed over the past few years, but the British Hallmarking Council is warning buyers not to be caught out by rogue traders.

"Buying jewellery over the internet can carry significantly higher risks than buying from a high street jeweller," says Tom Murray, chairman of the British Hallmarking Council.

"To minimise the risks it is most important, when you receive the jewellery, to check for a hallmark for gold, silver or platinum and if the jewellery has a diamond, usually of half a carat or more, make sure it also comes with a certificate."

Buyers are reminded that a stamp denoting purity is not equivalent to a hallmark.

Instead the hallmark should consist of three or more symbols: the mark of the sponsor, the fineness and the Assay Office.

Consumers eyeing up sparkly gems online should also ensure they only purchase natural and untreated gemstones and should specifically state that this is what they are after to avoid being landed with an artificial gem.

Finally, the Hallmarking Council is advising consumers to opt only for reputable vendors such as those part of TrustUK or ISIS schemes.
