The Oscars for this year's Academy Awards have gone on display in New York.

Times Square Studios will be the temporary home of the 50 golden men, with the Motion Picture Academy of Arts and Sciences offering film fans the chance to Meet The Oscars.

For most people this will be the closest they'll ever get to the golden award, but they'll have to hurry – the statuettes will be flown out to Los Angeles next week ahead of the ceremony itself on March 5th.

Each highly coveted 13 inch statuette is made from britannium and gold-plated and weighs in at an impressive eight and a half pounds.

Every statuette that doesn't make the stringent quality standards is melted down in the factory – suggesting it's almost harder to make an Oscar than to win one.

This is the first time the Oscars have been displayed in New York City.

Although almost universally referred to as "The Oscars", on the night the actors will actually be crossing their fingers for an Academy Award.

Rumour has it that the statuettes earned their friendly nickname after an employee at the Academy remarked, "hey they look like my Uncle Oscar" upon seeing the little golden men.
